Cult Jamaican classic starring reggae star Jimmy Cliff as Ivanhoe
Martin, a country boy who comes to Kingston to make it big in the
music industry. Hampered by payola and music industry corruption,
Ivanhoe turns to ganja-dealing to try and make ends meet. Events
spiral out of his control and he soon finds himself on the run from
the police. The celebrated soundtrack is peppered with reggae
classics by the likes of Toots and the Maytals, Desmond Dekker, The
Melodians and Cliff himself who performs, among others, the title
track and the timeless 'Many Rivers to Cross'.
Capital punishment is a debate that grips civil society anew with
every incidence of homicide. The cry from a majority of
stakeholders is a desperate plea to enforce the death penalty which
has been derogated by the courts, at home and abroad. The abatement
of capital punishment takes place amidst a tidal wave of
unrelenting crimes against the person, namely murder. The branches
of government seem bereft at best to provide a remedy and at worse
unable to enforce the law as it relates capital punishment in the
Bahamas. Added to this is an uneasy public whose trust in the
executive, legislative and judicial branches of government is
noticeably waning. Additionally, outside forces, led by
abolitionists, are bearing down on the Bahamas with a view of
nudging the nation and the Caribbean into an era of life
imprisonment for murder as opposed to death by hanging as its
penalty. Toote sets forth these issues with striking clarity,
offering practical remedies to help settle the controversy
surrounding the death penalty in the Bahamas and the Caribbean.
'Capital Punishment in the Bahamas and the Caribbean' in light of
the Privy Council's moratorium is required reading for all who
desire an appreciation of the subject of capital punishment,
including students, religious leaders and professionals in the
legal arena.

Afternoon sunlight poured through the round window into the small
cluttered cottage. Among the piles of ancient books and scrolls sat
an old man, deep in thought. Old Greplog paused, staring at the
ceiling as if seeking wisdom. Worry had etched deep furrows in his
forehead. Shaking his gray head, he muttered to himself. "How can
it be? I see rivers of blood. I see famine, disease and death. I
feel some ancient evil awakening to threaten us all. So many
prophesies. All of them pointing to this year for the fulfillment
of these things. But wait, yes I see and even greater good. What
does it all mean? It is certain that these will be perilous times
if we do not dance the moons...." He briefly shuffled papers around
until he found the one he was looking for. Holding it up to the
light he read aloud. "When the three moons in harvest full in
sacred triangle stand; then dance the dance and pay their due lest
tragedy stalk the land... We cannot allow anything to prevent us
holding the moon festival. May the High King have mercy on us."
Greplog bowed his head in prayer.
Toote, Ph.D., D.Min., LLB(hons.), J.P., has written a clear volume
on the ways of success in a contemporary secular post modern
culture, examining biblical principles and our attitudes in today's
ever changing world. In his work, Toote offers insights into the
lives of all who would be successful. Dr. wrote 'The Successful
Life Now' for all those who feel that there is more to living than
they are currently experiencing. The book is intended to be a
resource for all both in discovering and releasing their God given
potential. More than an academic product, a careful reader would
find a trove of practical guidelines propelling one to a better
quality of living. Once the reader gains insight into his or her
true potential, he or she will be challenged to assess just where
they are along the path to a divinely intended glorious future and
hope Now. This exercise will in turn lead the reader to take steps
critical to achieving their successful life. Careful attention to
the principles set forth in the book will greatly enhance one's
prospects of success to the degree that persons apply them. The
author himself attributes much of his own accomplishments in the
area of family and well being, relationships and career success to
the twelve steps outlined in the 'Successful Life Now'.
Armando Marsans, who joined the Cincinnati Reds in 1911, was the
first Cuban star of the major leagues. Events in baseball have
often mirrored America's social development-Jackie Robinson's
breaking of the color barrier is one example-and the story of
Armando Marsans has much to teach about the United States and Latin
America during the early 20th century.
In detailing the career of Marsans, this work also
recapitulates baseball history in Cuba and describes the early
development of professional baseball in America. Examples of how
Americans reacted to Marsans as a player and a per son, and the
prevalence of Latino stereotypes during this era, are fully
explored. Part biography, part sociological study, this book
introduces the reader to a physically gifted player and to a young,
powerful America struggling to find its own identity in its new
ethnic makeup.
